Jennifer Walshe

Jennifer Walshe is a composer and vocalist. She was born in 1974 in Dublin, and studied composition in Ireland (with Kevin Volans) as well as in Glasgow and Chicago. Jennifer received her doctorate from Northwestern University in 2002; from 2003 to 2006 she lived in Germany courtesy of a residency from Akademie Schloss Solitude and then in Berlin as a guest of the DAAD Künstlerprogramm. She works within a wide variety of musical genres – concert music, music theatre, opera, improvisation, and sound installation. Her work has been performed throughout Europe and the U.S. by ensembles including Alter Ego, ensemble récherche, Ensemble Resonanz, Apartment House, ensemble Intégrales, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, CrashEnsemble, Champ d’Action, the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the Bozzini Quartet, Concorde, the Hebrides Ensemble, Psappha, and Q-02. She is currently Reader in Music at Brunel University, London. Walshe has written many operas, ranging from XXX_LIVE_NUDE_GIRLS!!! (2003) for Barbie dolls and ensemble to most recently Die Taktik, an opera commissioned by the Junge Oper Stuttgart, which received 14 performances in Stuttgart in 2012. In addition to her activities as a composer, Jennifer frequently performs as a vocalist, specialising in extended techniques. Many of her compositions are commissioned for her voice either as a soloist or in conjunction with other instruments, and her works have been performed by her and others at many international festivals such as RTÉ Living Music (Dublin), Maerzmuzik and Ultraschall (Berlin), Transit (Leuven), Ars Musica (Brussels), Sonorités (Montpellier), Ultima (Oslo), Borealis (Bergen), Experimental Intermedia (New York), Wien Modern, Witten, Donaueschingen, Huddersfield, and MATA (New York) to name only a few. Jennifer is also active as an improviser, performing regularly with musicians in Europe and the U.S., and in her duos Ma La Pert with Tony Conrad and Ghikas & Walshe with Panos Ghikas. Walshes work is available on many labels, including Mere Records, Interval Recordings, Farpoint Recordings, and Migro.
