Jan Rokyta (1969) studied cimbalom under Ludmila Dadáková at the Bratislava Conservatory and recorderunder Walter van Huawe and Paul Leenhouts at the Sweelinck Academy in Amsterdam. In the field of contemporary classical music, he has collaborated with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra and later in the Netherlands with ASKO/Schönberg ensemble, Concertgebouworkest, Het Nieuw Ensemble, Nederlands Blazers Ensemble or with the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra. He is a frequent guest of symphonic and chamber orchestras in Germany and Austria. Rokyta premiered cimbalom compositions of Dutch composers Patrick van Deurzen, Florian Maier, and Klaas de Vries. His repertoire also features difficult chamber compositions by Pierre Boulez or György Kurtág. Rokyta is the Art Director of the 6-member Ensemble FLAIR which produces genre-defying music based on the tradition of Moravian folk music. Rokyta’s compositions and arrangements are inspired, among other, by the works of Leoš Janáček or the poetry of Petr Bezruč.
