ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
John Cage's Europera 5 (1991) will be
directed by the composer's former assistant, Andrew Culver. The singers
will include the American soprano Martha Herr, who performed the premiere,
staged by Cage on May 21, 1991 in Amsterdam. Europera 5 was
the composer’s last and most portable opera. It is a collage scored for two
singers, each singing five arias of their own choosing from the standard opera
repertoire; a pianist playing six different opera transcriptions; a Victrola
player playing six historical opera recordings; a performer playing a
pre-recorded tape; a radio and a silent television.
Ecstasy is the subject of Salvatore Sciarrino’s Infinito nero (Black
Infinity), a half hour-long monodrama for
voice and eight instruments. The work is based on the vision of a 16th Century
mystic, Saint Maria Maddalena de'Pazzi (1566-1067). It will be sung
by the mezzo-soprano Katalin Károlyi, for whom Györgi Ligeti composed his
last pieces, Sippal, dobbal, and nadihegedüvel.
Salvatore Sciarrino’s La porta della legge (2009)
was originally commissioned by the Wuppertal Opera. For this Czech premiere
production, OCNM is collaborating with Wuppertal, using the singers and staging
from the world premiere performance. The libretto of the opera is based on an
excerpt from “The Trial” by Franz Kafka. Ostravská banda, under the direction
of Petr Kotik, will perform both pieces by Sciarrino.
František Chaloupka will introduce his new
opera Eva and Lilith, which will be fully staged by Ostrava Opera
House under the direction of Jiří Nekvasil and David Bazika. It
will be performed by Mr. Chaloupka’s group, the Dunami Ensemble.
