Petr Kotik, Conductor The S.E.M. Ensemble will give its annual concert at Paula Cooper Gallery this December 13, 2011, with a premiere of a new work by Kate Soper. The program takes into account the spatial situation of the main gallery, which will host a large steel sculpture by Mark di Suvero. The music will be performed around the sculpture, using the distances between individual musicians and groups of players divided into various parts of the large main gallery. In addition to works by John Cage, Luigi Nono, Kate Soper and Petr Kotik, the program also includes two compositions by the Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabrieli (1597), whose music was designed for the spatial situation of the San Marco cathedral in Venice, placing musicians in various corners of the church’s gallery. The Ensemble will also perform John Cage’s “Atlas Eclipticalis” simultaneously with “Aria” and “Fontana Mix,” Luigi Nono’s duo for violins “Hay que caminar soñando,” and Petr Kotik’s “Kontrabandt” (1967), for four-channel electronic music. Kate Soper will be the soloist in Cage’s “Aria” as well as in her own work.
