START • THE COMING • THE PAST
Three independent programs that establish a striking variety of concepts: The Start and The Past will present the compositions of established composers, while The Coming will offer compositions by residents of the Ostrava Days Institute. This programming solution disrupts the traditional divide between “masters” and “students,” instead presenting all of the featured composers on equal footing. The works of the young composers will be presented alongside a “classic” of the 1960’s – Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Aus den sieben Tagen, based on textual instructions in which the performers are invited to let their intuition run wild. A highlight of The Start will be Tales of the Traveler, a recent composition by George Lewis, who is a pioneer of computer composition and one of the most distinctive American composers today.
Theatre of The Mind has been supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and Stichting Maysways.
