Petr Kotík entered the Prague Conservatory to study the flute in 1956 at the age of 14. Four years later, he began to compose, studying privately with Valdimír Šrámek and Jan Rychlík. In 1961, while still a student at the conservatory, he founded the new music group Musica viva pragensis. Since then, Kotík equally concentrates on composing and performing. Shortly after his arrival in the U.S. in 1969, Kotík founded the S.E.M. Ensemble, which expanded in 1992 into The Orchestra of the S.E.M. Ensemble. Kotík then became active as conductor. In 2000, he founded the Ostrava Center for New Music to produce the biennial Ostrava Days, an institute and festival for new music. In 2005, Kotík founded Ostravská banda to become the resident chamber orchestra at Ostrava Days.
