Liza Lim: Gyfu
Hello everyone, greetings from Rotterdam,
My name is Eduardo Olloqui and I am an oboist. I collaborate with Ostravská banda since 2010. Ostravská banda is a contemporary music ensemble founded in 2005 by Petr Kotik and it is composed by musicians from the USA and Europe, all of them specialized in contemporary music.
Every second year a festival called Ostrava Days takes place in the Czech city of Ostrava. In this festival we approach music from the 20th and 21st centuries, performing pieces by both living young and established composers, as well as classics of the 20th century. It consists of two weeks of very intensive work, in which we prepare orchestral pieces as well as chamber music and solo pieces.A great number of concerts take place during the festival, but also other activities such as workshops, masterclasses, lectures, etc.
For me it is a great pleasure every time I have the chance to collaborate on this festival. But this summer, unfortunately, because of the circumstances we all know, the festival had to be cancelled*. For this reason this great initiative has been raised, in which various members and collaborators of Ostravská banda are going to perform from our homes pieces for solo instruments, with the aim of continuing sharing music.
I am going to perform a piece by the Australian composer Liza Lim, a solo oboe piece written in 2011. This piece was commissioned by ARD Munich oboe competition. The piece is called ‘Gyfu’, and it means ‘gift’.

*Ostrava Days is a biennial festival which takes place every other year in Ostrava. In even years, another biennial festival is organized: NODO / New Opera Days Ostrava. The fifth biennial of NODO takes place from August 28 till August 30, 2020.
