Matthias Lorenz (1964) studied violoncello in Frankfurt am Main with Gerhard Mantel. Courses by teachers like Wolfgang Boettcher and Siegfried Palm rounded out his training as a cellist. Lorenz’s interest in musicology has always been a pillar in his work with the cello. He has long been active as a freelance cellist, mainly in the field of contemporary music. In addition, Lorenz has been actively involved working in other different genres as well: the fringes of rock and pop music genres (together with Albrecht Kunze and Can member Irmin Schmidt), music for the stage (including, among others, Frankfurt Ballet), or improvised music. Over the course of time, appearances with the Elole Piano Trio and the Ensemble Courage have been added to his activities as a soloist. He has been a member of Ostravská banda since 2011.
