Johannes Wieners
The countertenor Johannes Wieners has long been deeply engaged with contemporary music. He studied double bass, singing, and contemporary music in Rostock and Graz. At the age of 25, he made his debut at the Berlin State Opera in the world premiere of Oscar Strasnoy’s Robinson, performing the role of Die Jugend. He subsequently sang the title role of Witold in Strasnoy’s Geschichte at the Graz Opera and performed the role of Di in Diana Syrse’s To Fall Safely at the Staatstheater Braunschweig. This was followed by engagements at the Magdeburg Telemann Festival, the Neukölln Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, the Theater an der Wien, and the Theater Winterthur. In the course of his work, he has collaborated with numerous distinguished conductors, directors, and composers, including Chloé Dufresne, Bruno Ferrandis, Wolfgang Katschner, Bas Wiegers, Anna Bergmann, Lars Marcel Braun, Bernhard Lang, and Oscar Strasnoy. Wieners is also a founding member of the early music ensemble Due sopra il Basso, as well as part of the experimental format Äh-Musik. In 2026, he will appear in various projects at the Heidelberger Frühling Festival, the Munich Biennale, the Händel-Festspiele in Halle, Styriarte Graz, and at the Neue Oper Wien, where he will once again perform the title role of Witold in Strasnoy’s Geschichte.
