Zihan Zhao
Zihan Zhao (Mia) started her full-time music study in her early twenties at Chinese University of Hong Kong (M.A., 2020) and then with Christopher Butterfield at University of Victoria (M.Mus.) in Canada. Since childhood she has been playing the Chinese instrument, guzheng (21-string zither) and the piano, arousing her deep interest to fuse contemporary Chinese and western music. Her compositions cover a variety, from contemporary Gamelan (2022), commissioned by Evergreen Club, to theater music for im:print 2022, produced by Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria. She has also been dedicated to symphonic works, including commissions by Victoria Symphony and UVic Wind Symphony. Also fond of photography and the visual arts for long, she keeps exploring cross-media composition with film scoring and self-edited short films. Before entering her music profession, she studied quantitative finance at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (B.Sc., 2018).
