Annesley Black
Annesley Black (1979) is a Canadian composer based in Germany/Austria. Her works span from instrumental music and multi-medial concert pieces to music theatre, performances, installations and interdisciplinary collaborations. She appears regularly as a performer and musician on the international stage. Black has received many honors and prizes for her work, e.g. Busoni Composition Prize from the Academy of the Arts in Berlin (2008), and the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung Composer Prize (2019). She is a member of the Academy of the Arts, Berlin and the Canadian Music Centre (2018). She is a member of the Academy of the Arts Berlin and the Canadian Music Centre. Her works are commissioned and performed by both younger and established soloists/ensembles/orchestras for internationally renowned festivals (e.g. Donaueschinger Musiktage, Warsaw Autumn Festival, ECLAT Festival Neue Musik Stuttgart), and concert spaces. Black studied composition with Brian Cherney, York Höller, and Mathias Spahlinger in Montréal and Germany. She has held positions as an assistant professor in composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main, a guest professor at the Hochschule for Musik und Tanz in Köln, and professor for electroacoustic composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg. She currently teaches at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz, where she was appointed professor for composition in October 2023. In the same year, she participated in the Ostrava Days Institute for the first time and also presented her work in Ostrava.
