MusicPaper: The Darmstadt of Moravia

Ostrava is a city with an industrial past, with a history associated with coal mining, iron processing, and heavy pollution. But after all the mines closed in 1989, the old industrial facilities were converted into cultural spaces, museums and theaters, and the efforts of the whole community were focused on scientific research and culture, especially contemporary arts.
A contemporary music festival, the Ostrava Days, founded by composer Petr Kotík, has been held in that town since 2000: three weeks during which composers, the musicians, and musicologists from all corners of the world meet (very close relationship with the contemporary music scene in the United States, due to Kotik's connection with the city of New York, where he has lived since the 1980s, and where he founded the SEM Ensemble), animating a summer academy that has been described as a new Darmstadt School.
