Only a small number of operas composed today will see another production soon after their world premiere. The Austrian composer Bernhard Lang has now achieved such a feat of art. His short opera "Playing Trump" was, after its performance by the State Opera in Hamburg in August 2021, performed a year later in Ostrava, Czech Republic. It is the second piece in a series called "Cheap Opera", which includes three works; all of them are characterised by small casts and librettos compiled from documentary texts. While in Hamburg the opera, which makes do with one singer, five musicians and a conductor, could still be seen as an emergency solution in times of pandemic, in Ostrava it proved to be a unique and interesting contribution to musical theatre.
