Tempo: Ostrava Days 2025

Ostrava Days is a biennial event held in the former Czech mining city of the same name. Founded in 2001 by the Czech-American composer and flautist Petr Kotík, the festival seeks to mingle certain strains of American experimental music with composers and performers from around Europe, but especially Central Europe. For more than 200 years the city of Ostrava was a regional centre of the European equivalent to the American Rust Belt, so it already had the infrastructure to accommodate large crowds — many concerts take place in a former mining complex — and it is, importantly, cheap. A composer institute starts two weeks before the festival begins and continues for its duration, offering presentations by composers and performers (many of whom are featured in the festival), private lessons, improvisation classes and more.
