ONO – Ostrava New Orchestra
ONO – Ostrava New Orchestra is an international symphony orchestra for new music. It was created due to the urgent need for Ostrava Days to establish a symphony orchestra that would be primarily focused on the performance of contemporary music. ONO consists of 85 European and American musicians aged 20 to 35. The creation of the ensemble has been driven by the ambition to bring together new, young blood – players who are passionate about contemporary music and for whom interpretation gives them joy and satisfaction.The ambition of Ostrava Days organizers is to work with a highly professional symphony orchestra, whose energy, sound, way of working, and high degree of engagement will meet even the most difficult demands of contemporary music. Ensemble members are selected from leading conservatoires and universities in Prague, Berlin, Bratislava, Brno, Ostrava, Budapest, Cork, Haag, Huddersfield, Krakow, Lugano, Madrid, Oslo, and Boston, among others. ONO’s debut performance took place at Ostrava Days 2017 and included works by Morton Feldman, Olga Neuwirth, Phill Niblock, Salvatore Sciarrino, and Iannis Xenakis. In 2018 ONO appeared at NODO (New Opera Days Ostrava) festival and performed Alois Hába’s sixth-tone opera Thy Kingdom Come (1937–1942) under the direction of Bruno Ferrandis. In autumn 2022, ONO presented the concert "Essential Youth" in Prague and in DOX+ with conductor Petr Kotík, where they performed five world premieres by young composers.
